Is There a God?

Note: This article may be the most important article than I have ever written. Take time to study.

Introduction

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth”. No more profound statement has ever been uttered! He declared it to be and out of nothing it came to be! This statement has provoked more violent controversies, wild theories, and wide disagreements than any other statement found in the Bible.

Over the years unregenerated (natural) man has studied the mysteries of life, and speculated upon his origin. Since his eyes have been blinded to the truth, he has proposed theories that are contrary to the revelation of God. “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (I Cor. 2:14). “The god of this world [Satan] has blinded the minds of the unbelieving” (II Cor. 4:4b, NASB 1995).

Most of the articles written on this web site assume that the reader believes in God and the material was written to increase and enhance our understanding of God’s revelation, The Bible. In other words, we have been looking close up. Now I want to take a telescopic view of the question, is God real? Is there any proof that He really exists and if so what is that proof?

For many years I have asked my fourth and fifth grade Vacation Bible School students, and some of my adult students also, the question, what makes God God? After many different answers regarding His attributes, someone will say, “He is the Creator”. If He is the Creator, then He has absolute sovereignty over His creation and His creation is accountable to Him. The prophet Isaiah said: “But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand” (Isa. 64:8).

The insurmountable problem is the accountability issue. The sin of pride keeps us from recognizing our Creator and the authority He has over us. Therefore, we either deny His existence or we define our own understanding of who He is and how to respond to Him. Today, sad to say, the fact that we evolved is accepted in most places and, also, evolution is taught as a fact throughout the universe.

Richard Dawkins, a renowned atheist, humanist and evolutionist biologist reflects the views of many when he said, “If you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid, or insane (or wicked, but I’d rather not consider that)”. However, the Bible says, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good” (Ps 14:1).

“’For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,’ declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isa. 55:8, 9). “Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it” (Isa. 46:11b).

Our educational and scientific establishments have launched the theory that, over a long period of time, simple elements have evolved into more complex elements. Their theory is that, in the beginning, there were microscopic cells which accidentally mutated into more complex structures and, over billions of years, the whole process evolved into the complex universe and world that we live in today. According to their theory, all life has gone through this process with man eventually evolving from the apes.

Today, the theory of evolution is taught throughout our educational system beginning with the elementary level and going through college. Television programming and museums continually promote this indoctrination. The teaching of creation is prohibited in public schools based upon the infringement of religious freedom. Noted scientists, who represent the Institute for Creation Research in California, remind us that, “We are indoctrinated with the idea that evolution is an established principle of science, doubted by no reputable biologist or physicist. It is generally maintained that creation has been intellectually discredited, and has no support except that based on religious faith. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

There are several accepted schools of thought on the theory of evolution. Unfortunately, even though no theory of evolution has been proven to be factual, it is the only view of our original existence that is taught in our public schools. Views range from the atheist’s concept of no supernatural power to various theological concepts that try to reconcile scientific theories with the Biblical account of creation.

The naturalistic view assumes that there was no higher power guiding the process, and that we evolved from a one-cell germ by the processes of “natural selection” and “the survival of the fittest”. Most of us recognize this as the atheistic textbook version of evolution, which, unfortunately, continues to be taught as fact. One basic problem with this view is the absence of an explanation of how it all began. There is also another problem! There are not that many atheists in the world today—most people believe that there is a higher power and that power rules over the universe.

Many have explained our beginning by modifying the naturalistic view to include a higher power—one who controls the process. This higher power, who they assumed to be God, used the process of evolution to bring about His creation. This group basically does not recognize the uniqueness of man’s relationship with God. Such thinking often leads to the prevailing view that Jesus was simply a great teacher rather than a divine being.

There are other views of evolution that recognize that man is unique in his relationship to God. However, they teach that man evolved from lower animals, and at a certain stage, God gave man a soul and spirit. Others teach that God created man and woman out of the dust of the earth, but other animal forms progressed through the evolutionary process. Perhaps, the view most widely accepted by liberal theologians and Christian scientists is that a day in Genesis is not defined as twenty-four hours. Thus, there are six geological ages, each covering thousands of years that correspond to the six days of creation as recorded in Genesis.

There is another theory, known as the gap theory, which is, also, held by many liberal theologians. The second verse of Genesis reads as if the earth was made void and was later re-created. “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters” (Gen. 1:2).

Many believe that the universe and the earth were created first. Then after many years, a great catastrophic event occurred on earth and, after that event, God re-created the earth. Some put the original creation of the animals before the catastrophic destruction and others place them after the re-creation.

As we can see, there is a lot of speculation and disagreement. No one really knows how God created the heaven and the earth—He didn’t tell us. Dr. J. Vernon McGee tells a story about Paul Bellamy, editor of the “Cleveland Plain Dealer”. One of his reporters was making a long story out of a relatively unimportant event. After looking at it, the editor said, “Cut it down! After all, the story of creation was told in Genesis in two hundred eighty-two words.” The reporter replied, “Yes and I have always thought we could have saved a lot of arguments later if someone had just written another couple hundred”.

Perhaps we should read the words that were spoken to Job many years ago. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding” (Job 38:4). Since we were not there, we do not know. Therefore, we must accept the account of creation in Genesis by faith. The writer of the book of Hebrews said, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible” (Heb. 11:3). It is a creation out of nothing. He declared it to be and it was there!

Few of us are aware that several scientists, including highly trained paleontologists and geologists, have documented some of the fallacies of evolution, and have recorded many scientific evidences for believing in the creation as recorded in the book of Genesis. Under the auspices of the Institute for Creation Research, established by the late Dr. Henry Morris, Discover Institute, Answers in Genesis, and other books and publications have been written that are available today. There are, also, some very good videos available. However, most of us may never have access to the materials because our laws prevent their use in schools, and many churches tend to rely upon internally produced literature.

Are Creationist Real Scientists?.

I believe we can conclude our discussion on the teaching of evolution by stating that an intelligent designer has directed the entire process. We may not understand all of the details but it is absolutely impossible that all of the universe could have evolved spontaneously through an undirected process. It takes a huge amount of faith to believe in that theory!

Now we ask the question: who is this intelligent designer? Just click on the following articles.

The Evidence and the Verdict

I have tried to answer the question, is there a Sovereign God who created the universe and reigns over His creation. If this evidence were taken into a fair and unbiased courtroom, I believe that the evidence would prove that macroevolution is not valid and that there is indeed a Creator. In summary, let us consider four factors:

    • The evolutionist cannot go back in time where there was no physical existence. They begin with the big bang theory or solid-state theory which supposes that at least some parts of the physical universe has always existed.

    • Evolution violates the universal law of cause and effect. For every cause there is an effect and for every effect there is a cause.

    • Evolution violates the law of probability. The probability that the entire universe evolved slowly over time by undirected processes is just simply too unrealistic to believe.

    • Evolution seems to violate the second law of thermodynamics. The late Dr. Henry Morris, the modern day father of creationism, in his book “The Remarkable Birth of Planet Earth” wrote the following statement. “All processes manifest a tendency toward decay and disintegration, with a net increase in what is called the entropy, or state of randomness or disorder, of the system. This is called the “Second Law of Thermodynamics“. This would be just the opposite of what evolutionists teach.

Genesis chapter one begins with these words, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The New Testament adds additional insight. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:1-5). “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they” (Heb. 1:1-4).

When we look at the Scripture, it appears that all three parts of the Godhead, The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit took part in the creation. However, it appears that the Son, Jesus, was the one who did the creating. He is our Creator, our Savior and our Sustainer.

There are many who refuse to believe. Richard Dawkins, a renowned atheist, humanist and evolutionary biologist reflects the views of many when he said: “If you meet somebody who claims not to believe in evolution, that person is ignorant, stupid, or insane (or wicked, but I’d rather not consider that)”. However, the Bible says: “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God.’ They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none who does good” (Ps 14:1).

The time has come for us to make a decision. Will we accept the claims of Christ or will we deny them. God has given us this choice. We have a free will to choose. The Bible says, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 6:23). “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6b). “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him” Rev. 3:20a). “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name” (John 1:12).

How do we receive him? By penitently, confessing and repenting of our sins and trusting in Jesus as our Lord and Savior. This means turning our lives over to him. Paul writes these words in the book of Romans. “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation”…” For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved” (Rom. 10:9-10, 13).

To receive God’s salvations we must, through prayer, truly repent of our sins, ask Jesus to forgive us of our sins and to come into our heart as Lord and Savior. We must then believe that God has saved us and to step out on faith and tell others that God has saved us.

The following is a sample prayer. You may pray it wherever you are. If you mean it, then you will be saved. If you do not then you will not be saved. After God saves you, begin praying, reading your Bible (beginning with the Gospel of John), go to church and fellowship with other believers. Then ask to be baptized as a testimony of your salvation experience.

Sinners Prayer

“Dear Lord Jesus, I know that I am sinful and I need Your forgiveness, I believe that You died my sin. I want to turn from my sin nature and follow You instead. I invite You to come into my heart and life and be my Lord and Savior. In Jesus’ name. Amen”

Many have made this decision; many have refused to do so. The Apostle Peter says that it is the Lord’s will that all will be saved, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9, NIV). Some have turned to the Lord and will spend eternity in heaven. Others have chosen to deny God and maintain their independence—they will spend eternity separated from God in a place called hell.
