The Rapture Question in Summary

The Rapture Question in Summary

What is the Rapture?

• The word rapture comes from the Latin word “rapere” found in the expression “caught up” in 1 Thessalonians 4:17. The Greek word was “harpazo” which was translated to “rapere” and then translated to “caught up”.

Based up 1 Thessalonians 4:17 (4:13-18) there will be a rapture.

Who will be in the rapture?

• Paul is writing to the church at Thessalonica when He gave this promise.

• Contrast the program of the Church to the program of Israel.

• Based upon the meaning and the promises given to the Church (saved Jews and Gentiles), only the Church will be raptured.

When will the rapture take place?

• Historical Argument – The apostolic Church believed that the church would be raptured before the Great Tribulation – imminent return of Christ.

• Harmony of Scripture – distinguishes clearly between the Church and Israel and their respective programs. Programs are mutuality exclusive.

• The nature of the Church – Bride and Body of Christ, joint heir with Christ, judgment of believer’s works in heaven, marriage in heaven, will return with Christ at Second Coming.

• Daniel seventy weeks of chapter nine clearly shows the time line for the program with Israel.

• Nature of the tribulation – The wrath of God is poured out on those living during the tribulation. The Church is promised that they will not endure the wrath of God.

• The Holy Spirit and the true Church are a restraining factor on the Antichrist. ( 2 Thess. 2:1-15).

• The word Church is not used in the description of the tribulation in Revelation.

Therefore we must assume that the rapture takes place before the tribulation.
